Vaginismus: Botox for the Vagina

When it comes to the practice of aesthetic enhancement, Botox® provides a popular cosmetic remedy for facial wrinkling and frown lines. This trendy treatment is often the first weapon of choice in the battle against facial furrows and creases. Botox is well known for its ability to reverse some of the more common signs of aging, at least temporarily. This substance also plays a key role in treating various physical disorders.

Botox Properties

Botox is the brand name for a type of toxin known as botulinum toxin type A. This variety of toxin produces a type of paralysis. By using injections of this toxin to targeted areas, doctors can cause specific muscles to relax and weaken. This property is what makes Botox an ideal treatment for facial wrinkles, as well as a temporary way to smooth out unpleasant facial expressions. In addition to enhancing the facial features, Botox also works to paralyze sweat glands in people who experience excessive perspiration in the underarms, palms and soles of the feet. Recently, Botox has even entered the realm of treatment options for vaginismus, a type of female sexual dysfunction.

Vaginal Pain

Vaginismus is a condition that produces moderate to severe vaginal pain due to involuntary muscle contractions along the walls of the vagina . The pain generally occurs while attempting intercourse or inserting a tampon, although this condition can also lead to discomfort during other activities, such as sitting on a bicycle seat. The involuntary muscle contractions can even make it nearly impossible for some women to have a gynecological exam. The traditional approach to treating vaginismus includes various forms of therapy; however, there is recent evidence that Botox may provide a useful alternative treatment, especially in cases where traditional therapy fails. According to, a service of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, intravaginal Botox injections used in conjunction with progressive dilation have produced a cure rate in excess of 90%.

Botox Treatment for Vaginismus

The procedure for treating vaginismus with Botox takes about 20 minutes. A typical treatment session is as follows: • You will be given a sedative prior to the procedure.

• Your doctor will administer a topical anesthetic to the walls of your vagina, massaging the anesthetic into the tissues to help relax involuntary spasms in the introital muscles.

• After the anesthesia and massage cause the muscles to relax, your doctor will inject Botox into the walls of the vagina . The Botox helps relax the involuntary muscle spasms by causing temporary paralysis within the nearby nerves.

• Your doctor will then place a dilator into the vagina to help stretch the muscles.

Before you go home, you will receive additional dilators and instructions on how to remove and replace the dilators at home. The first dilator – the one that your doctor places - is usually the hardest to insert, making the use of sedation, topical anesthesia, and Botox especially helpful.

Recovery Expectations

Most women experience pain-free intercourse within two to six weeks after the initial procedure. During this time, you will have a follow-up visit and be required to adhere to a specific treatment plan. Although using Botox for facial wrinkling and expression lines entails further injections to continue providing optimal results, Botox for vaginismus seldom requires additional treatments. Once the vaginal muscles are stretched by the dilators, additional injections of Botox are not required, even after the temporary paralysis effect wears off.
