What is Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a procedure where the surgeon scrapes away the top layers of skin using an electrically operated instrument with a rough wire brush or diamond-impregnated burr. The scraping is done until the safest point where the scar or wrinkle is less visible appears. This can smooth scars left by acne, accidents, or previous surgery, as well as fine facial wrinkles, especially those around the mouth. This results in the appearance of smoother skin. Dermabrasion can be performed on small areas of skin or on the entire face. The procedure can take only a few minutes for the surgeon to perform. This all depends on how large of an area needs to be treated.

There is also dermaplanning, which is used to treat deep acne scars. During this procedure, a dermatone is used to skim off surface layers of skin that surround facial defects. Skin is skimmed off until the lowest point of acne scar becomes more even with the skin surrounding it. For both procedures, you may feel some irritation in the skin. It is important that you follow your doctor’s post-surgery instructions for both dermabrasion and dermaplanning.
