Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery Dr. Commons is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a professional organization whose exacting standards of surgical excellence define the specialist surgeon. The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc., which administers rigorous written and oral testing of surgeons who specialize in plastic surgery, also certifies him as a plastic surgeon.

His years of experience in plastic surgery began in 1968, first as a plastic surgery Resident and Fellow at Stanford University Medical Center, then as Chief of Plastic Surgery in the U.S. Air Force at Clark A.F.B. in the Philippines.

Since 1976, Dr. Commons has enjoyed a practice of aesthetic surgery in Palo Alto. He is an adjunct clinical assistant professor in the department of surgery (plastic surgery) at Stanford University Medical Center, where he participates in training plastic surgeons in the Residency Program.

Dr. Commons is the Medical Director of the Plastic Surgery Center of Palo Alto, a state licensed and federally approved facility. Dr. Commons' professional papers have appeared in Surgical Forum, British Journal of Plastic Surgery, Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Journal, the Annals of Plastic Surgery, Problems in General Surgery, Clinics In Plastic Surgery, and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal. In addition, numerous articles by Dr. Commons have been published in general organization newspapers and magazines, including American Express Departure, Peninsula Magazine, Fit, 50 Plus, California Focus, etc. He is also a guest speaker/lecturer and teaches his surgical techniques throughout the United States and internationally
