Our patients' experience in their own words
At Plastic Surgery Associates, we believe the best medical care is based on trust and understanding. Our goal is to ensure that you are comfortable during each step of your procedure.
If you have questions, we’ll answer them thoroughly and honestly. If you have doubts, we’ll listen. Our concern for our patients’ needs is what sets us apart—as many of our patients will attest.
Susan, age 47

Since my facelift, the biggest differences I’ve noticed haven’t been on the outside, but on the inside.
I remember five, ten years ago, when I used to go around the house singing. But little by little, I stopped singing. I felt I was fading. I started to avoid looking in the mirror.
My mother, kids, husband and friends all said, "Why do you want a facelift? You’re only 47." But it’s not like the plastic surgery of 20 years ago. It’s not a last resort. It’s kind of like analysis. Our mothers and grandmothers probably could have benefited from talking to psychologists, but nobody did that back then.
I have a new job since the surgery. I represent a fine jewelry manufacturer. I really enjoy my work. I enjoy dealing with people, and I have to influence people in my job. That’s hard to do well if you don’t feel good about yourself.
Now I’m singing out loud again. I actually enjoy looking in the mirror. I will never lose the gains I’ve made.
Kaely, age 36

I came to Plastic Surgery Associates to fix the damage another surgeon had done. I had a nose job and a breast augmentation by a surgeon who didn’t have much experience. I looked worse than before I went in.
Months after the first surgery my nose still looked really bad. Finally the surgeon agreed to do it over. But I was so scared before the surgery, I was crying. One of the nurses felt sorry for me and offered to call me a cab, and asked, "Have you talked to other surgeons?" So that’s what I decided to do.
I had heard of Plastic Surgery Associates, but I thought they’d be too expensive. Now I realize you can’t scrimp on something that important.
It’s really important to find a surgeon who has a good reputation. Check into how many years’ experience they have, and whether they’re board certified. Most important, talk to some of the surgeons’ patients who’ve had the same procedure as you. I learned the hard way.
Ray, age 68

It was one of those days, when you get up and look in the mirror and think, "I could look better." I started thinking about a facelift.
I had lost my wife six months before. Maybe that had something to do with it. My doctor was very up-front about things, which I appreciate. He wanted to know what my expectations were. I just said I wanted to look better.
For other men thinking about surgery, I’d say, "Go for it." It’s not inexpensive, but your appearance is important. You can get a whole new outlook on life.
My son is director of radiation therapy at a large Grand Rapids hospital, so he knows the doctors in this field. He recommended my doctor. After my surgery, my son started thinking about having the same procedure. But then he started skin treatments down at Plastic Surgery Associates. He likes the results so much, he decided the facelift could wait.
Andrea, age 3

When Andrea was just a half-hour old, I was nursing her for the first time, and I thought, "She’s really working hard. Her little face is so red." Then we found out she had a "port wine stain" across her left cheek, part of her right cheek, up across her eye and on her arms. She also has glaucoma, which often comes with facial port wine stains.
At the age of three, between laser treatments and glaucoma surgery, Andrea has been under anesthesia 25 times. Now the port wine stain on her face is about 80 percent gone.
We’ve been so grateful for everything our doctor and his staff have done. They really work to keep the trauma down for her. Andrea’s also had hospital surgeries, which are very different. In the hospital you feel you’re caught up in a huge system. You feel kind of helpless.
But at Plastic Surgery Associates, I’ve always been dazzled by their professionalism and concern. They always remember your name and what you talked about the last time. They call afterwards to see how Andrea is, and they send cards. They treat you like a person, like a friend.
Una, age 60

I’m 60, and I think I look 45. I had a laser treatment. I think it’s the way to go. It’s very smoothing and firming. I didn’t look that bad before, but now I feel I look wonderful.
I’m a skin care consultant. I know how important it is for a woman to look in the mirror and feel she looks her best. That transforms into self-esteem.
The most important thing for a woman to know is that she must have confidence in her doctor. So I really did my research. I called the AMA and Michigan State. I went to see one surgeon in Lansing. He didn’t seem that interested in me. When I found my doctor at Plastic Surgery Associates, I was totally comfortable with him and felt he was a truly good person.
The people there are wonderful. They know who you are, and they treat you with deference. They’re attentive to your emotional needs. If you are uncomfortable with your post-surgical appearance, you are invited to a private waiting room. I feel comfortable every time I go there. I can’t praise them highly enough.
