Body Contouring

Liposuction or fat suctioning is rapidly becoming the most popular cosmetic surgery performed in the country. Its popularity can be attributed to the dramatic effects it achieves in body contouring and the permanent results in fat reduction, according to Lawrence Saks, M.D., F.R.C.S.
Liposuction eliminates the fatty deposits that create unattractive bulges or other deformities. These deposits normally occur on the hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, calves, arms and neck. All these areas are responsive to liposuction.
“The ideal candidate should be no more than 20 pounds overweight,” said Saks. “Younger patients, with more elastic skin, achieve the best results. However, liposuction can be performed in older patients, and the redundancy of skin can be removed at the same time giving a firmer more youthful appearance.”
Liposuction is usually performed under a local anesthetic with sedation or general anesthesia. There is no pain during the operation. The length of time off work is about three to 10 days. There is some swelling, bruising, and tenderness for about three to four weeks.
In order to minimize complications and to achieve the best aesthetic result, surgery should be performed by a board certified plastic reconstructive surgeon. |
