Cellulite Treatment

Cellulite is a common condition that leads many women, as well as some men, to seek specialized treatment from a plastic surgeon or medical spa. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cellulite treatments accounted for 14% of the cosmetic minimally invasive procedures performed during 2010. Although various cellulite treatments have been around for years, advancements in technology continue to provide new options. One of the newest cellulite treatments to enter the professional arena comes in the form of specialized laser equipment, known as the Cellulaze Cellulite Laser Workstation. The Cellulaze procedure is FDA-approved to improve the appearance of cellulite.

What is Cellulite?

Commonly referred to as “cottage cheese” fat, cellulite affects more women than men. It causes the surface of the skin to appear rippled and bumpy. Cellulite most commonly appears on the thighs, buttocks and hips, as well as the lower abdomen and upper arms. It occurs in women of all sizes, not just those who are obese or overweight. Certain factors, such as heredity, age, hormonal levels and smoking can all play a role in the development of cellulite. Thinning and stretching within the overlying fibrous tissue causes the underlying fat pockets to bulge and protrude, creating the lumpy surfaces. Unlike fat in many locations, cellulite tends to resist the efforts of diet and exercise, giving it the reputation as being one of the most stubborn types of fat to lose.

How Does Cellulaze Work?

According to Cynosure, the company that markets Cellulaze, this cellulite treatment reduces the appearance of lumpy fat while increasing skin thickness and elasticity by targeting and thermally disrupting the pockets of herniated fat and fibrous bands of tissue responsible for trapping the fat. This system uses a YAG 1440 nm wavelength with a bidirectional laser flow delivery. Unlike some types of laser treatments, Cellulaze requires a small incision to allow for the insertion of a tiny fiber optic tip. This targets the bulging fat and provides access to the fibrous septae that promote puckering. Heat from the laser beam encourages an increase in skin elasticity and thickness, helping to smooth over the remaining fat and re-contouring the skin.

What to Expect with a Cellulaze Treatment

Cellulaze cellulite treatments take about one hour. One treatment session is generally sufficient to produce noticeable results, even when treating large areas of cellulite. Optimal results require about three months to appear. During this time, the treated skin regenerates and renews itself, resulting in thicker, more elastic skin that creates a smoother appearance. As with most cosmetic procedures, Cellulaze may cause some side effects. The most common side effects involve minimal bruising, discomfort, pain and swelling. These conditions are generally mild and tend to resolve within the three-month healing period.

How Much Does Cellulaze Cost?

Cosmetic procedures, including Cellulaze laser treatments, tend to vary greatly across the United States. According to Cynosure, the average cost for Cellulaze treatment ranges from $5,000-$7,000 depending on the size of the area to be treated and the city or town where you choose to have your cellulite laser treatment. Health and medical insurance policies rarely cover this type of cosmetic procedure, making it important to check with your doctor for exact costs. Some providers offer payment plans for professional services.

What Results Can I Expect?

Although the technology is still new, pilot studies have shown an increase in skin thickness and skin elasticity within one year of using Cellulaze. Test subjects experienced about a 21% increase in skin elasticity as long as 12 months after having the treatment. As with all cosmetic procedures, it is important to discuss your concerns and aesthetic goals with your plastic surgeon during a consultation visit. To assist your search, use our
