How is hymen repair performed?
Hymen repair involves stitching the edges of the remaining hymen together to reconstruct it; the tissues then grow back together and take on the form of the original hymen. In many cases, the vaginal walls are also tightened to restore a “virgin” physique. If the hymeneal remnants are not able to be used, the surgeon can reduce the opening of the vagina using a small portion of the vaginal mucous tissue.

If it is impossible to reconstruct the natural hymen, another option is an implantable hymen; surgeons claim that the hymen implant can rupture during intercourse, similar to a natural hymen.

Hymen Repair Recovery

Normally, patients can return to work the following day after surgery. However, they are cautioned against strenuous work or exercise. Many surgeons use dissolvable stitches that do not require removal; no matter what kind of stitches your surgeon utilizes, it is important to attend your follow up appointment to ensure a safe, healthy healing from hymen repair. Patients must wait three to four weeks to have sex.

Hymen Repair Risks
The most common risks associated with hymen repair include bruising, swelling, discomfort, and numbness. While infection is a less common occurrence, it is always a risk following any elective surgery. Following your surgeon’s instructions explicitly can help reduce the risk of infection following hymen repair.

Who is a candidate for hymen repair?

Good candidates for this procedure are healthy women with realistic expectations regarding surgery results. Hymen reconstruction may assist a woman by restoring the physical illusion of “virginity,” but it does not guarantee the acceptance or approval of a parent or partner. Women should seek non-surgical help, such as a family or relationship expert, if they have concern for their own safety or well-being.
