Benefits of Male Breast Reduction

The embarrassment that men affected by enlarged or “female-like” male breasts can be significant, especially in light of recently coined cultural slang that targets the condition (i.e., “man boobs”). Gynecomastia correction can remedy a man’s exposure to humiliation and make him more comfortable in professional and personal situations. For teenage boys affected by gynecomastia, male breast reduction can reduce the embarrassment experienced during this already sensitive time of one’s life.

How is male breast reduction performed?

Gynecomastia surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure in an office-based surgical facility, ambulatory surgical facility, or hospital. In some cases, an overnight hospital stay is recommended. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.

It normally begins with the surgeon making an incision on the edge of the nipple (areola) or in the underarm area. Then, excess glandular tissue, fat. and skin are cut away from around the pigmented area surrounding the areola and from the sides and bottom of the breast by working through the incision. Sometimes, liposuction is used as well (minor cases may require liposuction only). When liposuction is used, a small drain may be inserted through a separate incision to remove excess fluids.

For all gynecomastia surgeries, the sutures are applied and the incisions are covered with a dressing. The chest may be wrapped to keep the skin firmly in place.

How much pain is associated with male breast reduction?

Some swelling and minimal bruising will be present following gynecomastia correction. These symptoms should dissipate within five to eight weeks. Patients may also experience numbness for four to eight weeks. Massage techniques, which the surgeon will demonstrate following the procedure, will help desensitize the chest skin and nipple in order to avoid hypersensitivity or skin irritation. It is important to follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding post-operative chest massage.

Patients are also likely to experience some cramping pain, particularly in the areas where fat was removed. This pain can be easily controlled with prescribed medication.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery

Most gynecomastia patients are permitted to return to work within one week, but those with strenuous occupations may be advised to wait longer. Exercise and lifting will be limited for several weeks following surgery, but movement is encouraged to maintain blood circulation for healing. Patients are discouraged from exposing themselves to swimming pools and jacuzzis for at least four weeks.

"Most patients note minimal scarring

following male breast reduction, but some scarring should be expected if significant skin removal was required during surgery."

For most patients, some blood-tinged fluid will ooze from the incision sites for the first day. The surgeon leaves these tiny incisions partially open so that the liquid spills out and diminishes the risk of bruising. Beds should be covered by clean sheets that can be disposed of following recovery.

Most patients note minimal scarring following male breast reduction, but some scarring should be expected if significant skin removal was required during surgery. Patients are advised to wait to buy new clothing until all post-operative swelling has stabilized.

Risks of Male Breast Reduction

"Potential, but uncommon complications

from gynecomastia surgery include bleeding, seroma, infection, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. "

As with any elective surgery, there are risks and complications associated with male breast reduction. Following the instructions given to you by your physician will minimize the chance of any risks occurring. Potential, but uncommon complications from gynecomastia surgery include bleeding, seroma, infection, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. Rarely, a patient may require a blood transfusion during the operation if these risks occur. Other, less serious risks include a change in nipple and skin sensation, skin contour irregularities, and skin sensitivity. Patients can also reduce risks and complications by quitting smoking for at least two weeks prior to, and two weeks after, undergoing the procedure.

Who is the ideal candidate for male breast reduction?

Good candidates for gynecomastia surgery are men or teenage boys affected by enlarged, “female-like” breasts. They should be in good physical health, and they should not currently be engaged in illicit drug or anabolic steroid use. Ideally, candidates should attempt to rule out obesity as the primary cause of gynecomastia by attempting to treat the condition with diet and exercise first.
